US officials believe Ukraine likely behind Kremlin drone attack: Report

Drone attack on Kremlin early this month likely orchestrated by Ukraine's special military or intelligence units

WASHINGTON (AA) - Ukraine's special military or intelligence units were likely behind a drone attack on the Kremlin this month, according to US officials cited by the New York Times.

US intelligence agencies are uncertain about the responsible unit behind the attack, which is the latest in a series of covert actions against Russian targets, the newspaper reported.

The report also states that it remains unclear whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or his top officials were aware of the operation.

The initial assessment by US agencies was grounded on intercepted communications between Russian and Ukrainian officials, said the report.

The US officials also believe Ukrainians were behind the assassination of the daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist, the killing of a pro-Russian blogger, and a series of attacks in Russian towns near the Ukraine border, including the recent incident on Monday.

In early May, the Kremlin said that Ukraine attempted a drone strike on the residence, claiming that two drones were intercepted and shot down.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials have since denied Kyiv’s involvement in the attack.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the US of being behind the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin residence.
