US posts $27B budget surplus in June

Government revenues up 13% to $526B, expenditures down 7% to $499B

The US federal government posted a budget surplus of $27 billion in June, thanks to increased customs revenues and lower education spending, according to the Treasury Department.

The US Department of the Treasury released its budget balance report, and in the ninth months of the 2025 fiscal year, covering October 2024 to September 2025, government revenues rose 13% to $526 billion, while expenditures fell 7% to $499 billion.

Market expectations were to see a deficit of $41.5 billion.

The federal government had posted a deficit of $71 billion last June.

In line with US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, customs duty revenues rose 301% compared to the same period last year, reaching $27 billion.

Customs duty revenues, which exceeded $100 billion for the first time in a fiscal year, were at $113 billion for the nine months.

Education expenditures decreased y 91% year-on-year in June.


- 9-month figures

As of June, the ninth month of the 2025 fiscal year, the total deficit reached $1.34 trillion, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.

The deficit reached $1.3 trillion in the same period last year.

In the first nine months of the fiscal year, revenues increased 7% compared to the same period last year, reaching $4 trillion, while expenditures rose 6% to $5.35 trillion.
