US Republican Youngkin wins Virginia governor election: Unofficial results
Youngkin defeats Democrats' candidate McAuliffe in tight race

WASHINGTON (AA) - Pulling off an upset, US Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin has been elected as Virginia's next governor, unofficial results show.
According to the Virginia Department of Elections, Youngkin got 50.98% of votes while the Democrats' candidate, former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, received 48.25%.
Independent candidate Princess L. Blanding was also in the race, getting only 0.7% of the votes.
Official results will be certified on Nov. 15, and the new governor will be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2022.
