US Senate passes government funding package
Lawmakers vote 71-29, sending package to House, not set to reconvene until Monday, with federal shutdown to take effect midnight

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US Senate on Friday passed a funding package ahead of a deadline that will trigger a paritial government shutdown at midnight.
The lawmakers voted 71-29 on the package which includes five long-term appropriations bills, while extending funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for two weeks to allow further negotiations over immigration enforcement.
The bill now heads to the House of Representatives.
Federal funding is still set to expire at midnight, as the House has yet to act on the legislation and is not expected to reconvene until Monday.
