US senator urges FBI to support Texas in bringing back Democrats who left state

'I request the FBI’s assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators,' says John Cornyn

WASHINGTON (AA) - US Sen. John Cornyn urged the FBI on Tuesday to support Texas law enforcement in bringing back House Democrats who left the state in an attempt to block legislative action.

"I write to encourage the Federal Bureau of Investigation (‘FBI’) to take any appropriate steps to aid in Texas state law enforcement efforts to locate or arrest potential lawbreakers who have fled the state," Cornyn wrote to FBI Director Kash Patel.

Cornyn expressed concern about an “orchestrated maneuver” by members of the Texas House of Representatives to evade their legislative responsibilities.

On Aug. 3, dozens of Democratic lawmakers reportedly left for other states like Illinois and New York in protest of a proposed redistricting plan, effectively denying the chamber a quorum and halting legislative proceedings.

"In a representative democracy, we resolve our differences by debating and voting, not by running away," said Cornyn, adding that the Texas Department of Public Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers.

"I request the FBI’s assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law.

"The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime," he said.

The letter raises concerns that some of the lawmakers may have solicited or accepted funds to support their departures, potentially violating bribery or public corruption laws.

"These legislators have committed potential criminal acts in their rush to avoid their constitutional responsibilities and must be fully investigated and held accountable.

"I urge you to work with Texas public officials to provide them the support they need," he added.
