WASHINGTON (AA) – A U.S. destroyer was targeted Wednesday for the second time in less than a week by a cruise missile launched from the Yemeni coast area held by Houthi rebels, an American defense official told Anadolu Agency.
The cruise missile was fired at the USS Mason
from “a Houthi-controlled area south of Al Hudaydah”, according to the official who said in an email that no injuries or damages to the ship were reported.
“The missile did not reach the ship,” the official said. “The ship detected the missile today at about 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. EDT) [0400GMT].”
According to the official the USS Mason “fired countermeasures”.
“It is unclear if the countermeasures caused the missile to hit the water, or if it would have hit the water on its own,” the official added.
Two cruise missiles targeted the destroyer on Sunday.
The Pentagon announced early this week that the U.S. would take action against those in Yemen who targeted American navy in international waters.
