US stocks close Thursday with losses

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks closed Thursday with losses.

The Dow Jones fell 290 points, or 0.84%, to 34,474. The S&P 500 was down almost 34 points, or 0.77%, to 4,370.

The Nasdaq lost 157 points, or 1.17%, to 13,316.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 9% to 17.96. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, rose 0.7% to 4.288%.

The dollar index shed 0.23% to 102.93, while the euro rose 0.33% to $1.0940 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold falling 0.2% to $1,889 per ounce and silver increasing 1.2% to $22.67.

Oil prices were up around 0.7%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $83.83 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $80.10.
