US stocks open lower to kick off new week with losses

ISTANBUL (AA) – US stock market opened lower on Monday to kick off the new week with losses.

The Dow Jones was down 110 points, or 0.32%, to 33,815 at 9.52 a.m. EDT (1452GMT). The S&P 500 fell 22 points, or 0.54%, to 4,114.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq decreased 78 points, or 0.66%, to 11,927 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was up 5.4% at 19.32, while the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 2.6% to 3.623%.

The dollar index added 0.48% to 103.41, while the euro lost 0.5% to $1.0741 against the greenback.

Precious metals were on the rise, with gold increasing 0.4% to $1,872 per ounce and silver adding 0.1% to $22.32.

Crude oil prices were up around 0.5%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $80.44 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $73.61.
