US Treasury terminates all use of Anthropic, Claude AI: Secretary

ISTANBUL (AA) - The US Treasury Department is ending its use of artificial intelligence products from Anthropic, including its Claude chatbot and coding agent, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Monday, citing orders from President Donald Trump.

Bessent posted on US social media company X that the decision reflects a broader government review of AI technologies and their alignment with US national security and operational priorities. The statement did not provide a detailed timeline for when the transition away from Anthropic products would be completed.

"The American people deserve confidence that every tool in government serves the public interest, and under President Trump no private company will ever dictate the terms of our national security," he said.

The Treasury’s decision marks the latest step in a deepening clash between the federal government and Anthropic, a San Francisco-based AI company known for building safety-oriented language models.

The dispute erupted late last month after President Donald Trump instructed all federal agencies to halt their use of Anthropic’s technology, citing national security concerns and objections to contractual restrictions governing how its AI systems can be deployed.

Trump alleged that Anthropic had pressured the Department of Defense by maintaining policies that prohibit the use of its models in fully autonomous weapons systems or mass surveillance programs — areas where the Pentagon had reportedly sought greater operational flexibility.

After the company declined to lift those safeguards, the White House moved to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk and ordered agencies to discontinue its products across government systems.
