WASHINGTON (AA) – The U.S. on Thursday sentenced a 20 year-old Mississippi woman to 12 years behind bars for attempting to provide material support to Daesh.
Jaelyn Delshaun Young pleaded guilty March 30 to seeking to aid Daesh alongside her husband Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 23, according to a Justice Department statement.
U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock ordered Young to serve 15 years of supervised release after she completes her prison term.
The former honors student faced a maximum of 20 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
Dakhlalla separately pleaded guilty to the same charge roughly half a month earlier on March 13. He will be sentenced Aug. 24, according to the department.
The couple was arrested in August 2015 at a Mississippi airport en route to Syria where they sought to join Daesh under the pretense of going on their honeymoon, according to court documents.
