Uzbek president, head of UN General Assembly discuss expanding cooperation

Mirziyoyev, Bozkir talk on Uzbekistan's economic, social development, Central Asian region, Afghanistan, COVID-19 vaccines

ANKARA (AA) - The Uzbek president and the Turkish president of the 75th UN General Assembly on Tuesday discussed expanding cooperation, according to a statement by Uzbekistan's presidency.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Volkan Bozkir, who is paying an official visit to Uzbekistan, and the two leaders discussed prospects for expanding multifaceted cooperation of Uzbekistan with the UN, and its specialized agencies, the statement noted.

Mirziyoyev and Bozkir also exchanged views on regional and international issues. They focused on the economic and social development of the country and the Central Asian region, promotion of partnership on gender equality and youth support, as well as expanding access to COVID-19 vaccines, according to the statement.

It also described the importance of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN agencies as a "priority" to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring global and regional security, combating today's new threats and challenges, including overcoming the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Issues relating to the Afghan peace process were among the discussed topics.

Both sides agreed to continue a "close and fruitful dialogue on the priorities of mutually beneficial cooperation" at the end of the meeting.
