By Bahtiyar Abdulkerimov

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AA) – Uzbekistan on Wednesday welcomed the formation of an interim government in Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry said.

"We hope that this decision will be the first step towards achieving a comprehensive national accord and lasting peace and stability in the country," it said in a statement.

The ministry expressed readiness to develop "constructive dialogue" and "practical cooperation" with the new government formed by the Taliban, who swept to power three weeks ago.

The group has announced a 33-member interim cabinet headed by Mullah Hasan Akhund, expressing hope that it will be recognized by the international community, particularly the Muslim world and neighboring countries.

Afghanistan, which is home to a significant Uzbek minority, shares a 144 kilometer (89 miles) border with Uzbekistan.
