BEIJING (AA) – A video of a Turkish soldier helping a victim of the earthquakes in southern Türkiye circulated on Chinese social media Tuesday.

The video, released Monday by the Turkish National Defense Ministry, shows the soldier giving his boots to a person who did not have shoes in the earthquake zone.

A story including the video was shared on the Baidu and Weixin platforms, which have hundreds of millions of users.

The platforms said the incident was "one of the most touching scenes to emerge after the disaster.”

"A Turkish soldier encountered a survivor without shoes. On a road covered with snow, the soldier saw the earthquake victim wearing only socks and took off his own boots and gave them to her," said the platforms.

The platforms also quoted a statement by the Turkish National Defense Ministry saying: "The Turkish soldier has sworn to sacrifice his life for this people and country without hesitation. Therefore, when he sees that a citizen on the street does not have shoes on their feet, he does not hesitate to give his own boots."

At least six people were killed and 562 others wounded when two smaller earthquakes of magnitudes 6.4 and 5.8 jolted Türkiye’s southernmost province of Hatay on Monday evening, the country’s disaster agency said.

The Hatay-centered quakes came just two weeks after the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes centered in Kahramanmaras.

At least 42,310 people have been killed by the two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Feb. 6, the country’s disaster management agency said Tuesday.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said the quakes, centered in Pazarcik and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaras province, were followed by 7,184 aftershocks.

The powerful twin quakes struck 10 other provinces – Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye and Elazig.

More than 13 million people have been affected by the disaster.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of fewer than 10 hours.
