White student faces expulsion for urinating on Black student’s belongings in South Africa

‘This was a racially motivated attack,’ says Change.org petition

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - Thousands of South Africans have signed a petition calling for the expulsion of a white student who was recorded urinating on the belongings of a Black student at Stellenbosch University.

By Tuesday afternoon nearly 50,000 people had signed the petition to expel Theuns Du Toit, who urinated on the desk, textbooks and laptop of Babalo Ndwayana, a Black first-year student at the hall of residence.

“This was a racially motivated attack, and in response to his actions,” according to the petition posted on Change.org. Du Toit claimed that “this is what we do to Black boys.”

Many on social media have said the incident is reminiscent of decades of racial hatred against Black South Africans under the apartheid system which ended in 1994.

According to media reports, the incident occurred Sunday but came to light Monday when the victim posted the video showing Du Toit urinating on his belongings after entering his room at the Huis Marais hall of residence.

“It was traumatizing and I feel my dignity was taken away. But I would forgive him,” Ndwayana told local media.

The university said it has suspended Du Toit as it investigates the incident and more action will be taken depending on the outcome of the inquiry.

Petitioners want the university to expel Du Toit because he has violated another student’s human dignity and needs to be removed from the institution.
