WHO calls on Ethiopia, Eritrea to lift siege on Tigray

ISTANBUL (AA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to lift the siege in the Tigray region.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus drew attention to the humanitarian situation in the region in northern Ethiopia.

Ghebreyesus also asked the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea to strive for peace.

Pointing out that the health system has collapsed in Tigray, Ghebreyesus said people have started to die of hunger.

The Ethiopian government declared a unilateral cease-fire on March 24 to speed up humanitarian aid efforts in Tigray and the rebels declared that they would abide by it.

According to the UN, over 90% of the 6 million people in Tigray need urgent help.
