World leaders congratulate Turkish President Erdogan on his reelection in phone calls

Presidents of US, Russia and Ukraine among those who congratulated Erdogan

ISTANBUL (AA) - World leaders spoke by phone late Monday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to congratulate him on his reelection.

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin were among those offering their felicitations.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also congratulated Erdogan in phone calls, as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also congratulated Erdogan on his election victory. The two leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and regional developments.

French President Emmanuel Macron also offered his congratulations to President Erdogan on his reelection.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was also among the leaders congratulating Erdogan on his election victory. The two presidents also agreed to appoint ambassadors and advance relations.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also called Erdogan to congratulate him on his victory.

According to unofficial results, the Turkish incumbent won the race with 52.16%, while opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 47.84%, with around an 85% turnout.

More than 64.1 million Turkish citizens were registered to vote, including over 1.92 million who earlier cast their ballots at polling stations abroad.

On May 14, no candidate crossed the 50% threshold in the first round, triggering the presidential runoff, although Erdogan took the lead with 49.52%.​​​​​​ On the same day, Erdogan’s electoral alliance also won a majority of seats in parliament.
