Yemen’s Houthis say fired ballistic missile on Riyadh

Houthi rebels claim missile struck targeted King Salman Air Base in Saudi capital and caused heavy losses

By Zakaria al-Kamali

SANAA (AA) - Yemen’s Houthi group on Saturday claimed to have fired a ballistic missile on Saudi capital Riyadh, according to a local military source.

The source said the missile was fired on King Salman Air Base in Riyadh, the Houthi-run Saba news agency reported.

According to the agency, the missile struck its target and caused heavy losses in the base.

There was no comment from the Saudi authorities or the Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthis on the claim.

Yemen fell into civil war in 2014, when Houthi rebels and allied forces of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh overran capital Sanaa and other parts of the country.

The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched an extensive air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and shoring up Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.
