Zambia to repatriate body of student killed in Ukraine

Foreign minister says relations with Russia remain sound despite death of Lemekhani Nathan Nyirenda, 23, on frontlines

By James Kunda

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Zambia has concluded the process to repatriate the body of a student who died fighting for Russia in Ukraine, an official said Friday.

Foreign Minister Stanley Kakubo told parliament that the remains of Lemekhani Nathan Nyirenda, 23, will arrive Sunday.

"I held a telephone call conversation with my counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, where I pressed for information regarding the circumstances surrounding Lemekhani’s death,” said Kakubo. “The Russian foreign minister, while expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, confirmed that Lemekhani was pardoned on August 23 in order to join the military operation, in exchange for amnesty and in a Note Verbale to the ministry from the Russian Embassy in Lusaka dated Dec. 5, we were informed that Russia allows for prisoners to be provided an opportunity for pardon in exchange for participation in the special military operation."

As Lemekhani's remains were being prepared to leave Moscow on Saturday, Kakubo said relations between the two countries remained cordial despite the incident.

He said Lemekhani was the only Zambian student incarcerated in Russia and negotiations to have him deported were underway at the time of his death.

Kakubo said there was no Zambian student incarcerated in Ukraine or on the books of that country's military.
