ISTANBUL (AA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his party’s federal election victory and discussed defense cooperation, sanctions against Russia, and Canada’s upcoming G7 presidency.
Zelenskyy wrote on X that he informed Carney about the consequences of recent Russian missile strikes and stressed the urgency of reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense systems. “As Russia ramps up ballistic missile production, we need protection against them,” he said.
The leaders also addressed diplomatic efforts toward a “full, unconditional ceasefire and a dignified peace.” Zelenskyy emphasized that further sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors “can certainly influence” Moscow’s decisions.
He noted preparations for joint action through the so-called "coalition of the willing" and future formats of cooperation, particularly under Canada’s G7 leadership. “We are counting on effective cooperation,” he added.
Carney’s Liberals retained power in the country's election on Monday.
