Dengue cases cross 100,000 mark in Bangladesh

Overall death toll has now reached 485 since beginning of this year

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) – Health authorities in Bangladesh on Monday reported nine additional deaths due to mosquito-borne dengue fever while the number of cases surpassed 100,000 mark.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the dengue epidemic situation in Bangladesh as continuing to worsen, with the health ministry recording 2,197 new hospitalization cases across the country.

Out of the newly reported cases, 872 were from Dhaka in the 24-hour period leading up to 8:00 am local time on Monday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the recent fatalities, 6 occurred in Dhaka city, while the remaining casualties were from various regions across the country.

The overall death toll has now reached 485 since the beginning of this year. The majority of these casualties, numbering 363, were recorded in the capital, Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the total number of dengue cases has increased to 102,191. Among these cases, 49,328 were reported from Dhaka, as stated by DGHS.

Out of the total admitted patients, 94,020 individuals, including 45,358, have been discharged after receiving successful medical care, according to data from DGHS.

Bangladesh recorded 281 deaths attributed to dengue last year, marking the second-highest toll since 2000, when the country began keeping records.
