UPDATE - COVID-19 cases keep rising in Eurasia, C.Asia

Belarus, Azerbaijan Tajikistan, Moldova, Uzbekistan, report new cases, deaths

CHISINAU, Moldova (AA) - Several Eurasian and Central Asian countries reported new cases and deaths from the novel coronavirus Thursday.


- Ukraine

Ukraine’s Health Minister Maksim Stepanov announced 2,134 new infections over the last 24 hours, bringing the tally to 98,537. Over 40,000 tests were carried out by health professionals in the past day, Stepanov said.

A total of 2,184 people died of COVID-19, with 40 additional fatalities. Some 704 people recovered from the disease over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of recoveries to 50,441.

Stepanov urged people to follow measures against the virus.


- Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s Health Ministry said the number of cases reached 37,547 in the country with 181 additions. The death toll climbed to 252 as two more people lost their lives to the virus.

A total of 33,216 people have recovered so far with 317 more recoveries.

The country started to ease COVID-19 measures as of Aug. 15.


- Armenia

Armenia’s Health Ministry announced 263 more coronavirus cases, bringing the tally to 42,319. Three more people died of COVID-19, taking the death toll to 836. A total of 35,476 people have recovered from the virus in the country so far.


- Kazakhstan

According to the country’s Health Ministry, the number of cases rose to 103,815 with 244 additions over the past 24 hours. A total of 164 people recovered over the last day, bringing the tally to 86,450. The death toll reached 1,461 with 15 more fatalities.


- Georgia

Georgia’s Prime Ministry said in a statement that there are 1,411 cases in the country with nine more additions over the past day. The number of recoveries reached 1,108 as 10 more people recovered over the past 24 hours. Deaths from the virus stood at 17.


- Moldova

Moldova reported 522 new cases of the virus, bringing the tally to 31,937.

At least seven fatalities were recorded over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 921, while recoveries increased to 22,411 after 242 additions.


- Belarus

The total number of cases in Belarus rose to 69,950 with 149 additions over the past 24 hours.

The death toll in the country rose to 627 as five more people died of the virus.


- Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan reported 139 more cases bringing the total number of cases to 34,759, including 510 deaths and 32,511 recoveries.

A total of 1,738 patients are receiving medical treatment.


- Tajikistan

Tajikistan reported 37 more cases over the past 24 hours, raising the overall count to 8,203, including 66 deaths.

A total of 7,006 patients have recovered, while 1,131 remain under treatment.


- Worldwide

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 789,200 lives in 188 countries and regions since it originated in China last December.

The US, Brazil, India, and Russia are currently the worst-hit countries in the world.

Nearly 22.48 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries exceeding 14.37 million, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.
