ATHENS (AA) - Almost four in 10 adults and one in four children will be obese by 2035 in Greece, the World Obesity Atlas for 2023 said in a report.

The report published Thursday by the World Obesity Federation ahead of World Obesity Day on March 4 said in 12 years 39% of adults will be obese -- 42% of men and 36% of women, compared to 29% in 2020.

For children and adolescents, the proportion of obese people will increase from 12% in 2020 to 18% in 2035 for girls. For boys it will rise from 19% to 27%.

Those in danger of obesity will face serious health issues if measures are not taken, said experts.

Insufficient activity, sugar consumption, soft drink consumption, sweet and savory snack consumption and confectionary consumption are among the drivers of obesity, according to the report.

It said if the worldwide trend continues, the costs for treatment will rise to $1.45 billion in 12 years from the estimated $1.26 billion currently.
