Biden confirms he will sign $1.7 trillion funding bill to avert government shutdown

Once law, ban on using social media app TikTok on US government-issued devices to cover nearly all agencies

ISTANBUL (AA) - US President Joe Biden confirmed Friday that he will sign a $1.7 trillion bipartisan funding bill, hours before a government shutdown deadline at midnight.

"This bill is good for our economy our competitiveness, and our communities – and I will sign it into law as soon as it reaches my desk," he said in a statement.

Biden said the bill will advance cancer research, provide the highest funding for the Violence Against Women Act in history, strengthen worker protections for pregnant women, expand health care benefits to veterans and provide additional assistance to Ukraine.

The bill cleared the House of Representatives with a 225-201 vote hours before a government shutdown, after passing the Senate 68-29 on Thursday. It will fund federal agencies until Sept. 30, 2023.

The legislation also codifies a ban on using the social media app TikTok on nearly all US government-issued devices, replacing patchwork initiatives previously limited to a handful of government agencies.

The ban will cover nearly all government agencies.
