Canada's retail sales make 1.1% gains in June

Rise driven by higher sales at gasoline stations, as well as motor vehicle and parts dealers

ANKARA (AA) - Canada's retail sales rose 1.1% month-on-month to $63.1 billion in June, according to figures released by Statistics Canada on Friday.

The market forecast was for a slight gain of 0.3% for the month and continued with the 2.3% increase in May.

Sales were up in eight of 11 subsectors, data showed.

The increase was led by higher sales at gasoline stations (up 3.9%), and motor vehicle and parts dealers (up 1.8%).

Core retail sales -- which exclude gasoline stations and motor vehicle and parts dealers -- edged up 0.2%, the agency said.

On an annual basis, retail trade increased by 11% in June, down from 14.4% in May.

Retail sales in Canada are expected to fall by 2% in July, preliminary estimates have shown.
