Kenya presses EU on economic deals with African bloc

Deals between EU, East African Community can make 'tremendous difference' in Africa, serve European bloc's interests, says Kenyan president

NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – Kenya’s President William Ruto on Tuesday urged the EU to focus on urgently concluding economic partnership deals with the East African Community (EAC).

These agreements “can make a tremendous difference” in Africa and are also in the EU’s best interests, Ruto said at the Kenya-EU Business Council meeting.

He said the EU working with the EAC and Africa will help “create many opportunities for not only Africans but also the EU market itself,” including greater employment for both sides.

“I believe that continued consultations and collaboration can unlock these barriers and smoothen the path for stronger trade relationships,” said Ruto.

“We have an open, liberal, and business-friendly regulatory regime underpinned by a strong reputation for the rule of law,” he added.

Kenya’s trade with the EU has been on an upward trajectory in recent years, standing at around $4.5 billion in 2020, and the bloc ranks as its largest trading partner.

Kenya mainly exports horticulture products, coffee, tea, and textiles to the EU, while importing machinery, vehicles, chemicals, and other products.

Addressing the summit, Carole Kariuki, chief executive officer of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), said Kenyan businesses are aiming for strong partnerships that will further open up trade and investment opportunities in the European market.

“At the same time, KEPSA works on the overall business environment of Kenya and collaborates with the government to make the country more competitive and attractive for investors,” she said.
