Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed skepticism Wednesday that the US would impose 25% tariffs on Mexican goods starting Feb. 1, despite threats from President Donald Trump.

Speaking at a daily press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum expressed her belief that such a decision was unlikely.

“To be honest, we don’t think this will happen,” she said: “But if it does, we have a plan and will keep you informed.”

Sheinbaum confirmed that necessary talks with the US were ongoing and assured the public that Mexico was prepared for any outcome.

“Discussions are progressing, and if such a decision is made, we are ready,” she said.

Such tariffs could severely impact Mexico’s economy, which relies heavily on trade with the US, its largest trading partner, according to local media.

Trump announced earlier that one of his first executive orders upon taking office would be to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada, along with addressing “open borders.”

He vowed the tariffs would remain until issues like fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration were resolved.
