DOHA, Qatar (AA) - Russia has faced waves of sanctions over its war ion Ukraine, but no such penalties for its 2008 conflict with Georgia, the Caucasus nation's premier said Wednesday.

"All European, American friends ... you continue to (do) business as usual with Russia," Irakli Garibashvili asserted as he spoke at the Qatar Economic Forum in the Gulf country's capital Doha, referring to Moscow's continued presence in Georgia's northern breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"Russia built two military bases on our historic lands. Russia (continues to) recognize the so-called independence of our historic regions and this occupation is ongoing," Garibashvili said, claiming that as of last year, the EU had "paid $2.5 trillion" to Moscow since its five-day conflict with Tbilisi over the two breakaway regions. "No one stopped the business. Nothing happened." he said.

In 2008, a five-day conflict referred to as the South Ossetia conflict broke out between Georgia and Russia concerning the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Tbilisi ultimately lost control of the areas and Russia later recognized them as independent states - Abkhazia and South Ossetia. They both remain internationally recognized territories of Tbilisi.

Georgia cut off diplomatic relations with Russia in response, after which Switzerland took up the role of mediator.

On the Russia-Ukraine war, Garibashvili reiterated his country's support for Kyiv and expressed hope that the conflict would end as soon as possible.

He said Georgia had "joined more than 500 resolution statements everywhere at every international platform" to support Ukraine and promote peace.
