DAKAR, Senegal (AA) - Togo received 118,000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson coronavirus vaccine as part of the fight against the disease.

President Faure Gnassingbe said on Twitter that his country is proud to be the first African nation to receive the Johnson and Johnson vaccine produced on the African continent.

Togo, which already uses Sinovac, AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines, ordered 4 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine under the coordination of the African Vaccine Foundation.

The demand for Johnson and Johnson is increasing on the continent due to its single-dose and ease of storage conditions.

A total of 337,820 people has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 158,310 have been fully vaccinated in Togo.

The country with a population of 8 million, has at least 16,401 COVID-19 cases with 156 fatalities.
