UPDATE - Turkish stocks end day with gains

BIST 100 rises over 1,200 points; Turkish lira gains value against foreign currencies

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index rose by 1.30 percent to 95,305.15 points with a trading volume of around 8.1 billion Turkish liras ($1.7 billion) in the closing session on Monday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 1,222.81-point hike from the previous close of 94,082.34 points, while it opened the day at 94,812.05 points, up 0.78 percent.

The benchmark index hovered between 94,173.46 points and 96,035.55 points, while 74 stocks on the index were on the rise, 18 on the decline, and eight flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 630.22 billion liras ($131.29 billion) at close, while the banking and holding sector indices climbed 3.08 percent and 1.04 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the banking sector index saw the best performance, while the leasing factoring sector index dropped the most, down 3.75 percent.

Shares of energy firm Gersan Elektrik showed the best performance on Monday -- up 8.82 percent -- while stocks of financial firm ISFIN lost the most, dropping 6.02 percent.

The BIST 100's most traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, defense company Aselsan, prominent polyester producer Sasa, and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate dropped to 4.7420 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) on Monday, from 4.7810 at last week's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate also fell to 5.5520 by market close -- from 5.6070 at Friday's close -- and one British pound traded for 6.2340 Turkish liras versus 6.2830 at the previous close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,231.30 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Monday, versus $1,213.30 at previous close.

The price of Brent oil climbed to $73.68 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) Monday, up from $72.88 at the previous close.

***UPDATE*** Turkish consumers' confidence in the country's economy rose in July, gaining 4 percent month-on-month, said statistical authority TurkStat on Monday.
