Employment increased by 160,000 in January, reaching its highest level with 32.22M, says Turkish labor minister

ISTANBUL (AA) - The unemployment rate in Türkiye was at 9.1% in January, up by 0.2 percentage points from December 2023, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed on Monday.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate was down from 9.7% in January 2023, TurkStat's data showed.

The number of unemployed persons totaled 3.2 million, up by 85,000 people, month-on-month in January.

The unemployment rate was at 7.7% for men and 11.7% for women in January.

"The number of employed persons increased by 160 thousand to 32 million 222 thousand persons in January 2024 compared to the previous month," it noted.

The employment rate was calculated as 49%, up by 0.2 percentage point, in January.

Vedat Isikhan, Turkish minister of labor and social security, said employment increased by 160,000 people in January, reaching its highest level with 32.22 million.

He said: "We see the increase in the labor force as promising for the realization of our targets in the coming period.

"We will continue to implement our policies to increase employment."
