US stock exchanges close Monday mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) — Major exchanges in the US stock market closed mixed on Monday.

The Dow Jones was down almost 197 points, or 0.49%, to finish at 39,806.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, was up almost five points, or 0.09%, to end the day at 5,308.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased nearly 109 points, or 0.65%, to close the session at 16,794.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1.4% to 12.16. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 0.6% to 4.446%.

The dollar index added 0.16% to 104.61, while the euro shed 0.11% to register at $1.0859 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in the green, with gold rising 0.43% to $2,425 per ounce and silver increasing 0.3% to $31.58.

Oil prices were down around 0.45%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $83.63 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $79.20.
