US stock exchanges close with major gains

Dow rises 1.57%, S&P jumps 1.96%, Nasdaq soars 2.43%

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stock exchanges closed with major gains Thursday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 524 points, or 1.57%, at 33,826. The S&P 500 rose 79 points, or 1.96%, to close at 4,135.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq soared 287 points, or 2.43%, to end the session at 12,142.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, plummeted 9.6% to 17.03. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield added 2.7% to 3.524%.

The dollar index rose 0.1% to 101.48, while the euro was mostly unchanged at $1.1026 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with the price of gold trimming 0.1% to $1,987 per ounce but silver rising 0.2% to $24.93.

Oil prices were also mixed, with the price of global benchmark Brent crude flat at $78.26 per barrel but US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rising 0.7% to $74.84.
