US stock market closes Monday mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major exchanges in the US closed mixed on Monday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones dropped 55 points, or 0.17%, to finish at 33,618. The S&P 500 added less than two points, or 0.05%, to close at 4,138.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, rose 21 points, or 0.18%, to end the session at 12,256.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, shed 1.1% to 17.01. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, rose 2% to 3.505%.

The dollar index was up 0.2% to 101.41, while the euro fell 0.1% to $1.1002 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with the price of gold adding 0.2% to $2,022 per ounce but silver trimming 0.4% to $25.56 an ounce.

Crude oil prices, on the other hand, soared over 1.8%, with the global benchmark Brent crude price at $76.64 per barrel and the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price at $72.83.
