US stock market opens Friday mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock market indexes opened Friday mixed.

The Dow Jones fell 58 points, or 0.18%, to 33,986 at 9.59 a.m. EDT (1459GMT). The S&P 500, however, rose 12 points, or 0.31% to 3,911.

Both indexes closed lower Thursday for the third straight session.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq increased 84 points, or 0.78%, to 10,937 points.

Netflix saw its stock price soaring 7.8% after the online streaming platform saw its paid membership rise 4% annually in the fourth quarter of last year, according to its financial results released late Thursday.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 1.6% to 20.19. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.7% to 3.457%.

The dollar index added 0.35% to 102.42, while the euro lost 0.03% to $1.0823 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold trimming 0.4% to $1,924 per ounce and silver shedding 0.3% to $23.76.

Crude oil prices were up, with global benchmark Brent crude gaining 0.2% to $86.35 per barrel, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $80.69 – a 0.1% daily gain.
