US stock market opens lower to kick off new week with losses

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major exchanges in the US stock market opened lower on Monday to kick off the new week with losses.

The Dow Jones fell 62 points, or 0.19%, to 33,422 at 10.00 a.m. EDT.

The S&P also 500 trimmed 29 points, or 0.73%, to 4,075.

The Nasdaq plummeted 147 points, or 1.22%, to 11,940 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 8.1% to 19.89.

Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1% to 3.419%.

The dollar index added 0.57% to 102.68, while the euro lost 0.55% to $1.0837 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with the price of gold losing 1% to $1,987 per ounce and silver falling 0.7% to $24.80 an ounce.

Crude oil prices declined around 0.1% with the price of global benchmark Brent crude at $84.97 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price at $80.66.
