US stocks end mixed; Nasdaq kicks off week with losses

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock indexes closed mixed Monday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq falling.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 101 points, or 0.3%, to close the day at 33,586.

The S&P 500 added four points, or 0.1%, to finish the session at 4,109.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, decreased 3.6 points, or 0.03%, to end the day at 12,084.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 3.1% to 18.97, and the 10-year US Treasury yield increased 0.9% to close at 3.415%.

The dollar index rose 0.45% to 102.55, while the euro shed 0.3% to $1.0861 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold losing 0.8% to $1,991 per ounce and silver trimming 0.4% to $24.88.

Crude oil prices fell around 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.28 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $79.91.
