US stocks end Monday lower to give up earlier gains

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major exchanges in the US closed Monday lower to give up earlier gains.

The Dow Jones was down 46 points, or 0.14%, to finish the day at 34,051. The S&P 500 lost 1.6 points, or 0.04%, to 4,167.

The Nasdaq decreased almost 14 points, or 0.11%, to end the session at 12,212.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1.9% to 16.08. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 3.7% to 3.582%.

The dollar index added 0.45% to 102.13, while the euro lost 0.42% to $1.0974 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with the price of gold losing 0.43% to $1,981 per ounce and silver falling 0.3% to $24.98 an ounce.

Crude oil prices decreased around 1.3% with the global benchmark Brent crude price at $79.32 per barrel and the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price at $75.68.
