US stocks end Monday mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) – The New York Stock Exchange had a mixed session on Monday, the start of the new trading week.

Markets rose last week after sharp losses triggered by tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump at the beginning of the month. Last week, Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him and that negotiations are ongoing to make a deal, claims denied by Beijing.

In another statement, Trump said that they would not lower tariffs on China unless they are buying something important.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said on Monday that China sells far more goods to them than the US sells to China and that high tariffs are unsustainable.

Bessent also said that one of the first US agreements for a tariff deal could be with India.

Mentioning the UK, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said more will be heard about trade agreements this week.

At the close, the Dow Jones index was up 0.28% or 114.09 points to 40,227.59 points.

The S&P 500 index rose 0.06% or 3.54 points to 5,528.75 points, while the Nasdaq index fell 0.1% or 16.81 points to 17,366.13 points.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1.25% to 25.15.
