US stocks open lower before inflation figures

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stock exchanges opened with losses on Monday, a day before the release of key inflation figures.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 90 points, or 0.23%, to 38,632 at 9.46 a.m. EDT (1346GMT). The S&P 500 fell 10 points, or 0.2%, to 5,114.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, decreased 12 points, or 0.08%, to 16,072 at the time.

US consumer inflation figures will be released before the market opening on Tuesday.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 6.9% to 15.76. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 0.02% to 4.087%.

The dollar index increased 0.1% to 102.82, while the euro lost 0.13% to $1.0923 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold adding 0.22% to $2,184 per ounce and silver increasing 0.86% to $25.18.

Oil prices were down around 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $81.19 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $76.91.
