US stocks open mixed, trying to stay in positive territory

ANKARA (AA) - The US stock market opened mixed Thursday, trying to stay in positive territory and end a losing streak.

The Dow Jones was down 34 points, or 0.1%, to 35,896 at 9.48 a.m. EDT with Walt Disney and Intel losing 1.1% and 0.8%, respectively.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, was up 9 points, or 0.21%, to 4,698 as Tesla increased 0.5%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq added 34, or 0.2%, to 15,956. Moderna and Novavax added around 3% apiece.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was up 0.6% to 17.21.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes, however, fell 0.2% to 1.601% and the dollar index lost 0.1% to 95.71.

Despite retreating below the critical $80 earlier, the price of Brent crude was up 0.75% to $80.88 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate rose 0.7% to $78.08.

Precious metals were down with gold shedding 0.25% to $1,862 an ounce and silver losing 0.7% to $24.91.

After plummeting to $58,373 at 5 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Bitcoin was trading around $58,880 with a 1.4% loss.
