US stocks turn negative to end lower

ISTANBUL (AA) - Despite a higher opening, US stocks turned negative to close lower Wednesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 38 points, or 0.11%, to finish at 33,646. The S&P 500 shed 16 points, or 0.41%, to 4,091.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq decreased 102 points, or 0.85%, to 11,929.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 0.05% to 19.09. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield shed 0.6% to 3.400%.

The dollar index trimmed 0.6% to 101.53, while the euro gained 0.02% to $1.0991 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold flat at $2,015 per ounce and silver trimming 0.1% to $25.48.

Oil prices were also mixed, with global benchmark Brent crude soaring 1.9% to $87.23 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $83.13 -- a 0.16% decline.
