Wall Street closes mixed with Trump remarks, tech gains

Nasdaq surpasses 6,100 points for first time in history

NEW YORK (AA) - Wall Street closed mixed Monday after President Donald Trump's remarks were balanced with gains in technology company stocks.

The Dow declined 27 points to end the day at 20,913. The S&P, however, rose 4 points to finish at 2,388.

The Nasdaq gained 44 points to close at 6,091 -- a new all-time closing record. The index climbed above 6,100 points during the day for the first time in history.

Trump said Monday that he is weighing a break-up of major American banks to divide investment banking from consumer lending activities.

He also said the federal tax on gasoline and diesel can be raised to create revenue for infrastructure spending -- a move that was last seen in 1993.

Both statements created worries among investors, who preferred tech stocks on Monday.

Twitter stock price jumped 5.3 percent, while Tesla saw its shares rise 2.8 percent, and Amazon stocks gained 2.6 percent.

Investors will closely watch Tuesday the quarterly financial results of Apple -- the firm with the highest market capitalization in the world.
